What Are UTM Parameters?
UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are simple tags you add to the end of any URL. When someone clicks that link, the tags are sent to Google Analytics, telling you exactly where your traffic came from: which ad, email, or social post drove the visit.
Required Parameters
utm_source
Identifies which site or platform sent the traffic.
Examples: google, facebook, newsletter, linkedin
utm_medium
The marketing channel type.
Examples: cpc, email, social, display, video
utm_campaign
The specific campaign or promotion name.
Examples: spring_sale, product_launch_q1, black_friday
Optional Parameters
utm_content
Differentiates similar content or links within the same campaign.
Examples: hero_image, text_link, blue_button, video_ad
utm_term
Identifies paid search keywords you are bidding on.
Examples: running_shoes, best_crm_software
