Core Web Vitals are a set of specific performance metrics defined by Google that measure real-world user experience on web pages. The three current metrics are Largest Contentful Paint, which measures how quickly the main content loads and should occur within 2.5 seconds; Interaction to Next Paint, which measures how fast the page responds to user input and should be under 200 milliseconds; and Cumulative Layout Shift, which measures visual stability by tracking unexpected layout movements and should stay below 0.1. These metrics are confirmed Google ranking factors and directly impact both search performance and user satisfaction. Why it matters: Core Web Vitals represent Google's clearest statement about what constitutes a good user experience, and they provide specific, measurable thresholds that websites must meet to avoid ranking penalties. Pages that fail Core Web Vitals assessments may be outranked by competitors with better performance scores, even when content quality and backlink profiles are similar. Beyond SEO, poor Core Web Vitals correlate directly with higher bounce rates and lower conversion rates. Research shows that a one-second delay in page load time can reduce conversions by up to 7 percent, and pages with excessive layout shift frustrate users who accidentally click the wrong element when content jumps unexpectedly. You can measure Core Web Vitals using Google PageSpeed Insights for individual page analysis, Google Search Console's Core Web Vitals report for site-wide monitoring, and Chrome User Experience Report data for real-world performance metrics. Common fixes include optimizing and lazy-loading images, eliminating render-blocking JavaScript, setting explicit dimensions on images and ads to prevent layout shift, and using a content delivery network to reduce server response times.
